Full tan leather binding; decorative embossed gilt rulling to front and back cover; green label with gilt title to spine, gilt embossed lettering "Schola Hulmeiana" (Hulme School) embossed on front cover; blue, grey and gilt marbled endpapers, all edges gilt, Beautiful handwritten dedication on first page: "The Hulme Grammar School Writing Prize Modern Third Form R E Livesley (signed) E K Brice Midsummer 1902". Very clean sound copy printed on glossy paper. Book has wear to surface of spine but is holding well; title clear; some rubbing to edges and corners; tissue guarded frontispiece with some faint speckles; otherwise text is very clean and clear. Small piece of corner page 13/14 missing - no loss of text; faint stain on bottom corners of Preface. Illustrated with one hundred original black and white photographs. 205 pages plus Index. Written in a clear, informative style, in the Preface (page ix) the author describes his own love of birds from a boy and his intention in writing the book which "in no way pretends to be anything in the nature of a scientific treatise but rather a chatty, though, so far as care and pains can make it, accurate little volume dealing with just such phases of bird life as are likely to attract attention and, I hope, set my readers observing and inquiring for themselves."
