About This Item
This is Dickens' last (complete) novel, and one of his most sophisticated and complicated. It was written in 1864-65 and is known for its biting social satire.
This copy was published by Chapman & Hall, Covent Garden, in August 1907. It is the first issue of this edition (see image). It was given as a gift to someone named Sophie in 1909 (see image). I can't tell if the inscription is in pencil or faded ink; I haven't tried to erase it.
It is olive green boards with a 'D' imprinted on the front cover and bright green lettering on the spine. The covers need a good brushing. The pages are a little darkened but the spine is in superb condition. There is one illustration, full-page, facing the title page; it is the original by Marcus Stone.
779 pages, 4 1/2" x 7".

Synopsis
Our Mutual Friend (written in the years 1864–65) is the last novel completed by Charles Dickens and is in many ways one of his most sophisticated works, combining deep psychological insight with rich social analysis. At one level it centres on, in the words of critic J. Hillis Miller, "money, money, money, and what money can make of life" but in a deeper sense it's also about 'human values'.
