About This Item

Oxford Book Company, 1960-01-01. Paperback. Acceptable. Oxford Book Company [Published Date: 1960] Oxford Social Studies Pamphlets No. 21. Paper covers, 92 pp. Black and white illustrations, maps. In acceptable+ condition. Grey and blue paper covers have bumping and creasing to edges and moderate overall scuffing, aging and soiling with the color scuffed off in several places along edges and spine. Previous owner's name in ink on front cover as well. Staple bound. Some notes in ink on inside of front cover and a few page numbers are circled at the bottom of the pages. Otherwise pages are lightly aged but unmarked, with occasional light spotting and soiling. NOT Ex-Library. A good reading copy. A pre-cold war snap shot of the relationships between the United States and its neighbors both to the north and south. Designed primarily for high school social studies classes, this is a concise summary of the strained relations among the countries after World War II, with a focus on the influence of Communism and other events that will ultimately lead up to the Cuban Missile Crisis and the cold war. Also noteworthy for providing some at best, tone deaf, and at worst, completely racist stereotypes of Latin American people. [From Foreword] The purpose of this pamphlet is to [provide] a compact but authentic, well-rounded, and up-to-date survey of our sister nations in the Western Hemisphere, including Canada and the 20 nations of Latin America. To this end, the author has assembled the basic facts and concepts (historical, economic, geographic, sociological, cultural, etc.) which seem most likely to give young Americans a valid insight into the living patterns of these neighboring lands... One major theme of the pamphlet is the relations of these nations with the United States, and their importance to us (and to the world) in the present fateful era of history. There has been no disposition to minimize the elements of disagreement between the United States and the states of Latin America... The text is supplemented with a variety of visual material (maps, graphs, cartoons, etc.) and with a group of questions and projects following each chapter.
