Washington D C: James William Bryan Press, 1915. Book. Good. Hardcover. First Edition. 233pp, colored fronti illustration, more than fifty text illustrations from photographs and artwork, some colored, including from 4 paintings by Col. H.H. Hart--each with a tissue protector), Preface by Mitchell Carroll. 4to/27cm. Decorated red cloth gilt, edgeworn at extremities, gilt dull, hinge papers cracked, internally clean. Good. A rather grand travel book to one of the more exotic areas of the East, perhaps the first by an American. The Reverend Frederick Ward Denys (c.1854- ) was an Episcopal Minister who is commemorated with the statue of a recumbent figure by the prominent American sculptor James Earle Fraser in Washington Cathedral, Washington D.C. Mitchell Carroll appears to have been the Managing Editor of Art and Archeology, the organ of the Archeological Institute of America, a journal in which at least one article on Kashmir by Rev. Denys appeared. Col. H.H. Hart was with the Royal Engineers of the British Indian Army. The James William Bryan Press appears to have been a small press which existed in the Washington DC area from about 1915 until the early 1920s. Dogra p.203..
