The Outermost House: A Year of Life on the Great Beach of Cape Cod

by Beston, Henry

Condition: Good+/Good-

Rinehart & Co., Inc. New York, Toronto. 1949. ix. 222 pages. This is the first printing of the 1949 edition as denoted by the circled "R" on the copyright page. As mentioned on the inside flap of the dust jacket, the 1949 edition was produced to celebrate the 20th year anniversary of this natural history classic originally published in 1928. The green covers are in good plus condition. There is moderate bumping at the top/bottom of spine and corners along with color loss along the spine and cover edges. The title and author are in bright gold on the spine. The covers retain much of their original color, there is some faint spotting, especially on the back cover. The binding is solid. The dust jacket is in good minus condition; it is quite worn. There is fraying, some tears, and moderate to heavy toning along most of the edges. A few chips are present. The spine of the jacket is sunned/toned with a few spots, but the writing (author, title,) are still very readable. There are areas of soiling on the jacket; the inside flaps are toned but the original price ($2.50) is present. Some tears in the jacket were repaired by tape (many years ago); the tape is only visible from the inside of the jacket. The dust jacket is now protected in a clear, archival removable cover. The interior of the book is in good plus condition. There is no writing or foxing detected in the book. Page edges are toned, but the pages in general are quite clean. There is a small tear at the bottom of pg. v. The book includes a few illustrations including an illustrated title page from a woodcut by Hope Nash.
