Synopsis

Outlander is a historical romance novel by Diana Gabaldon. The time-traveling twist made it a popular book (and series) when it was first released in 1991, and it recently regained an audience after a Starz adaptation that premiered in 2014. Claire Randall is leading a double life. She has a husband in one century, and a lover in another. In 1945, Claire Randall, a former combat nurse, is back from the war and reunited with her husband on a second honeymoon when she innocently touches a boulder in one of the ancient stone circles that dot the British Isles. Suddenly she is a Sassenach--an "outlander"--in a Scotland torn by war and raiding border clans in the year of our Lord 1743. Hurled back in time by forces she cannot understand, Claire's destiny is soon inextricably intertwined with Clan MacKenzie and the forbidden Castle Leoch. She is catapulted without warning into the intrigues of lairds and spies that may threaten her life and shatter her heart. For here, James Fraser, a gallant young Scots warrior, shows her a passion so fierce and a love so absolute that Claire becomes a woman torn between fidelity and desire, and between two vastly different men in two irreconcilable lives.

I love this series! This is a great story for any reader to enjoy as it contains elements of so many different genres: historical fiction, adventure, romance, medical drama, comedy, a bit of sci-fi, mystery...This is the first book of the Outlander series that still hasn't come to an end. As a loyal fan of this series I anxiously await the next book to reach the stores!Honestly, I found the beginning of this book a little slow, but once about 20 pages into the book, I just couldn't put it down. The style of writing that Gabaldon uses allows the reader to feel as though they are the main character - Claire Beauchamp, and embarking on an incredible journey in more ways than one. I don't want to give any of the plot away, so I won't, but I will leave you with this as you decide if you'll read this wonderful book or not. My husband does not read. He hasn't read a book since high school. He considered himself a book widower when I started this series and was rather miffed by Diana Gabaldon for stealing me away form him. I finally convinced him to try it. Now he's been checking the post office every day for the past week waiting anxiously for the next one to get here!
