Description:
Paris: L'Artiste, 1875. Heliogravure and drypoint on cream laid paper. 6 3/8 x 4 1/2 inches (160 x 112 mm) with full margins. Second state (of 2). Scattered rippling from moisture at sheet edges. Scattered handling creases throughout. Hard crease along extreme right sheet edge, one half inch from edge. Scattered light foxing, band of discoloration extending through image area. Ink notation on verso, pencil notations on recto, both well outside of image area. [Exsteens 300]. The first state image of La Parabole Du Semeur, as it is described in Exteens, was printed both in a large and small format. The grande planche, which measures approximately 350 x 250 mm, and the petite planche, which measures approximately 160 x 110 mm. Though a specific explanation is lacking, it appears as though The L'Artiste edition was printed from a plate created from the petite planche with the use of heliogravure, and subsequently finished with drypoint etching by an artist other than Rops. This accounts for the use of…

Description:
teNeues, 2003. Hardcover. Fine. Fine. only leafed through once. Tall book (almost 20 inches) that offers a fascinating new perspective on a town often photographed. Ships from Hawaii This pictorial tribute to one of the world's most beautiful and romantic cities offers a unique introduction to the "City of Light". Award-winning photographer Horst Hamann used a panoramic camera to painstakingly set up shot after shot, often finding himself precariously balanced off Notre Dame's gargoyles, the balconies of the Pompidou Center - even the Eiffel Tower. His efforts have produced an astonishing array of images, stark black and white compositions that lend these photographs a dramatic, often dreamlike quality, and offer unique, vertical reinterpretations of some of Europe's most recognizable cityscapes.

New York: Aperture, 2008. !st edition. Hardcover. New/no jacket as issued. NEW, in publisher's shrink-wrap. Ships from Hawaii with free Priority upgrade within the US. The year 2008 has witnessed a major shift in the way people across the world live: For the first time in human history more people live in cities than in rural areas. This triumph of the urban, however, does not entirely represent progress, as the number of people living in urban slums--often under abject conditions--will soon exceed one billion. From 2005 to 2007 Magnum photographer Jonas Bendiksen documented life in the slums of four different cities: Nairobi, Kenya; Mumbai, India; Caracas, Venezuela; and Jakarta, Indonesia. His lyrical images capture the diversity of personal histories and outlooks found in these dense neighborhoods that, despite commonly held assumptions, are not simply places of poverty and misery. Of course, slum residents continuously face enormous challenges, such as the lack of health care, sanitation and…

Description:
Routledge, 1990. 8vo size trade paperback; 390 pages including index From back: "This is a unique study, continuing the work of Merleau-Ponty and Heidegger, and using the techniques of phenomenology against the prevailing nihilism of our culture. It expands our understanding of the human potential for spiritual self-realization by interpreting it as the developing of a bodily-felt awareness informing our gestures and movements. The author argues that a psychological focus on our experiences of well-being and pathology as embodied beings contribute significantly to a historically relevant critique of idealogy. It also provides an essential touchstone in experience for a fruitful individual and collective response to the dangers of nihilism." Edgewear, moderate wear to covers with sunned spine; marginalia, underlining and very light highlighting on least 58 pages prior to page 107; two previously folded page corners, some stray ink marks on outside pages.
