London- Apud J.Jand P.Knapton, R.Knaplock, D.Mid-winter, B.Sprint, W.Innys and R.Manby., 1735 Book. Fair. Hardcover. This fascinating collection presents a detailed anthology ofVirgil's complete works important for its illustrations. Beautifully illustrated throughout including a folding pictorial map, twelve platesand a frontispiece depicting Maronis presenting his works to the king. Really needs a rebind. Chapters include Georgicon ad C. Cilnium Maecenatem, Liber I, Ae Neidos Liber II and Georgicorum Liber IV. Anitated notes throughout and an extensive index to the rear. Although written in a similar style to late antique grammatical texts and incorporating some genuine grammatical material, there is much baffling and outlandish material contained in Virgilius' writings: he discusses twelve kinds of Latin, of which only one was in regular use, and attributes much of his lore to grammarians up to a thousand years old, who debate questions such as the vocative of ego. Monastic bookplate to the front pastedown. Condition: In original calf binding with decorative front board. Externally, a trifle rubbed. Front board is held by cords only and back board is cracked. Both hinges are weak and may fail in the post. Internally, generally firmly bound but strained in places. Worming to the first 66 pages, but does not obscure text. Pages are bright though with light scattered foxing. Monastic library stamp to the front endpaper. Overall: FAIR..
