About This Item

London: Burns and Oates, 1904.. Translated from the French, with Preface by F. Andrew Egan. The Palace of Caiphas. And the New Garden of the Assumptionist Fathers, St Peter's, at Mount Sion. (With Plans and Designs). Pp.xx/71, map of Mount Sion frontispiece + 4 plans, printed author's compliment slip loosely enclosed, armorial bookplate of Convent of the Immaculate Conception OSF Bocking Essex to inside front cover. Grey card covers, slightly rubbed. VG.** "Joseph Caiaphas was the Jewish high priest, who is believed to have been involved in the Sanhedrin trial of Jesus and to have organized the plot to kill Jesus.... From 1888 to 1914, French Assumptionist archaeologists carried out excavations in the area, which revealed a 5th century church, The Church of St.Peter in Gallicantu, or St.Peter of the Cockcrow. This church is famous as well for being the place where Peter denied Jesus three times, then repented and reconciled with Christ after the resurrection...According to the assumptionist beliefs, the scene of Peter's disgrace was the courtyard of Caiaphas. Below this church, excavations revealed a large grotto, which may have been originally a tomb, which later served as a prison". (tripfreakz).
