About This Item
The First UK printing published by Secker and Warburg in 1937. The BOOK is in Very Good++ or better condition. Light pushing and rubbing at the spine ends and corners. The silver decorations and titling to the spine and front cover remain bright. Some toning to the text-block with a little offsetting to the end -papers. Free from inscriptions. The very scarce WRAPPER is complete and is in Very Good- condition with losses to the spine ends and edges - see images. Toning to the spine and folds. An 8cm closed tear to the upper spine and front flap folds. Some tape remnants to the verso of the wrapper. Despite its faults, the Richard Floethe wrapper artwork remains striking in the removable Brodart archival cover. The twelve full colour striking illustrations by Richard Floethe are present and clean. 'Richard Floethe by the time of his death in 1988, was considered one of America's premiere graphic artists and book illustrators, working in a variety of styles ranging from Realist to Expressionist to Surrealist. He eventually designed more than 100 books for children and adults. In 1936 he became director of the Federal Art Project's poster division in New York' and subsequently 'Instructor of commercial design at Cooper Union (1941-42) and art director of the New York War Service (1942-43)'. (Mary Adair Dockery). A very scarce title (more-so with its wrapper) which was subsequently reprinted by Puffin Story Books in 1944 with B/W illustrations. I can find no auctions records for this title. Collectible.More images available on request. Ashton Rare Books welcomes direct contact.
