PANIC. A PLAY IN VERSE

by MacLeish, Archibald

  • Used
Boston: Houghton Mifflin, 1935. Narrow quarto. Loose sheets, punched at upper corner, and string tied in plain wrappers, printed label. Some creases and use at corners, but very good. Uncorrected original galley proofs of the first edition. Beginning at page 73, the leaves are paginated, indicating a transition to page proofs; the galley running heads disappear. Some of these leaves are present as pasted over sheets, but no text (original or other) appears underneath. Extremely vulnerable format, and very uncommon indeed. The only comparable actual proof of this vintage by MacLeish we have noted before was lot 213 in the first session of the Goodwin sale (his own corrected proofs of CONQUISTADOR, 1932).

We have 9 copies available starting at $7.50.

"Wolfwatching" was Hughes' 14th collection of poetry - he digs deeply into his own childhood and his family history, as well as writing about nature's violence and the meaning he finds in it. Included in the collection is the poem "The Black Rhino" written for the purpose of raising funds to save this endangered animal. The Library Journal considered reading Wolfwatching was "like visiting a zoo envisioned by Hieronymus Bosch: we're caught between fright and fascination". Farrar, Straus and Giroux, 1983. First Edition. Paperback. Very Good. Unrevised, Uncorrected Proofs in plain, mustard-yellow wrappers. Kincaid's first book, a collection of short stories. Uncommon in this format, and in excellent condition other than what was done to it in FSG's mailroom: a small photocopy of the dustjacket copy proof, with ISBN, publication date, and price, was taped to the inner front cover. Once FSG would get these proofs from Crane Duplicating Service, they'd put an ink stamp on the cover in which they would fill in the price and publication date, which they did here in red ballpoint pen. A couple of small smudges to the rear cover and light toning to the edges, else Fine. In stock, ready to ship now from Evanston, IL!
