About This Item

London: The Chiswick Press Ltd,, 1935 & 1937. A homage to the royal panoramas of the previous century Two splendid panoramas, created to commemorate the Silver Jubilee of George V in 1935 and the Coronation of George VI in 1937, respectively number 25 of 100 and 93 of 125 copies. Both were commissioned by J. R. Abbey, the great collector of colour plate books and of panoramas, whose reference works in the subject are still the standard in the field. "A by-product of the collector's intense interest in colour-plate books was the commissioning of two modem panoramas to illustrate the Silver Jubilee of George V and the Coronation of George VI. The panoramas of the 19th century had always attracted Major Abbey and he therefore had the happy idea of commemorating in this genre two of the State Occasions of the 1930s. The artist was Miss Mary McNiele and her medium a stencil, which was coloured by hand, no light task" (Hobson & Munby, pp. 41-2). 2 panoramas, in original wooden cylinders with title and picture on outside, extending outwards from drawstrings and retractable by rotation, Jubilee: approximately 325 x 11 cm; Coronation: 560 x 11 cm. Housed together in custom green quarter morocco pull-off case. Collotype & stencil coloured by hand. In fine condition. Abbey, Life in England, 631 & 632. A. R. A. Hobson & A. N. L. Munby, "John Roland Abbey", in Book Collector, Spring 1961.
