Laid-is a most unusual artifact and an in-joke between two editing professionals - a TNS from R. L. Lemon, Saturday Eveing Post editor, to Rita Waterman, an editor at McCalls, Saturday Evening Post and later the founding staff of MS, that refers to hand made, paper ruler laid in: "The attached ruler is for your use in reading 'Papa Hemingway. If you place the top of the ruler at the top of th page, you will find that it measures the number of lines with uncanny accuracy. This is the actual, original, one-of-a-kinmd ruler used by Richard. C. Lemon in the process of editing the book for the Saturday Evening Post. Since your book is autographed, it was deemed only fitting that the ruler be autographed also and Mr. Lemon has kindly obliged using his nom d'edit." Amusing ephemera from the good old days of publishing.
