New York: Something Else Press, 1964. Oblong 4to (22 x 27 cm). Original cloth; pictorial dust jacket. Jacket tanned with a small chip to the top of the front panel. Boards a bit bowed. Else near fine. FIRST EDITION, INSCRIBED by Johnson to friend and art critic Suzi Gablik with a small drawing of an arrow piercing a heart that has the word "Love" written inside.
AN EXCEPTIONAL BLACK MOUNTAIN COLLEGE ASSOCIATION: friends since their time together at the school, Gablik was largely responsible for first exposing Johnson's work to a wider audience. In the autumn of 1955, she brought Elisabeth Novick to photograph the installation of dozens of Johnson's moticos, photographs that appeared in the inaugural issue of THE VILLAGE VOICE that October. In Gablik's seminal book POP ART REDEFINED (1969), she recalled that event: "The random arrangement [...] on a dilapidated cellar door in Lower Manhattan may even have been the first informal Happening." Gablik continued to champion Johnson's work throughout her career and they remained close until the artist's untimely death in 1995. We have located no other inscribed copies of this book, especially to an important association.

Description:
New York: The Something Else Press, 1965. Boards. Near Fine/Very Good +. Ray Johnson. The February 1965 limited edition, purportedly of 197 copies. In its rich-blue, patterned boards, this is a distinctly different binding from the pictorial cloth of the trade edition. Furthermore, this copy includes an original piece of Ray Johnson art, a 7" strip of collage (with thin striped paper running vertically against a deep blue), contained within an envelope fastened to the front pastedown. The book itself is clean and very presentable as well. Tight and Near Fine in a crisp, price-intact, VG+ dustjacket, with light chipping --and just a touch of very lght creasing-- along the panel edges. Oblong quarto, also includes 3 laid-in 8 1/2"x11" "Sample Pages" of "The Paper Snake", all distinct from each other and each a reproduction of a page from the book.

Description:
This book is in good condition. There is some wear on the front, back, spine, edges and corner of the cover. There is some dog-earring on the right corner pages of the book. The pages are white, crisp and clear of any markings. "This is a history of the visual arts produced in the geographical area that now constitutes the United States. Such a book is difficult to title. A History of United States Art sounds awkward and logically might even be construed to exclude the arts of the colonial period. Thus, with apologies to our northern and southern neighbors, I use the title A History of American Art, knowing full well that the terms America and the United States are not synonymous...." - Preface from A History of American Art
