Raleigh, N.C.: State Department of Archives and History, [printed by Winston Printing Co., Winston-Salem (vols. I-III) and Christian Printing Co., Durham (vols. IV-V)], 1950-1956. Five volumes. Original maroon cloth stamped in gilt. 24 x 17 cm. Fine, excepting a short (5 cm) closed tear to each of four leaves in vol. I (pp. 3-10) neatly repaired with transparent archival tissue with no loss. Otherwise a pristine set in the original printers' shipping cartons. Excepting vol. I., the cartons are still sealed as distributed by the publisher. FIRST EDITION. Willie Person Mangum (1792-1861) was born near Red Mountain, Orange County (present day Rougemont, Durham County). He served as U.S. Representative during 1823-1826 and U.S. Senator during 1831-1836 and 1840-1853. Elected as a Democrat, he opposed many of Jackson's policies, including the tariff and the national bank, and joined the Whig Party in 1834. In the presidential election of 1836, he was one of the four Whig candidates to oppose Van Buren, and he resigned his Senate seat after Van Buren won. Mangum remains the only North Carolinian to be nominated for the presidency by a major party. In 1840, Mangum served in the North Carolina legislature, where he helped institute statewide public education, a cause he had long espoused. During his second tenure in the Senate, he served as president pro tempore (1842-1845) and was a close supporter of Henry Clay. At the end of his political career, he returned to the practice of law and resumed planting on his Walnut Hill estate. His papers, covering the period 1807-1894, contain much of interest to local historians, as well as documenting his political career at the state and national level. [Please note: This large set will require extra shipping charges, which will be requested from the buyer after the order is placed.]
