Gorgeously illustrated with paintings and photographs of soldiers, cavalry, and officials from pre-historic Persia up to the 1970s. Languages: English, French, Farsi. Size: 32 x 22.3cm. Stiff wraps. 22.5 x 31.5cm. Unpaginated (about 194 pages). The 2,500 year celebration of the Persian Empire consisted of an elaborate set of festivities that took place on 12-16 October 1971 on the occasion of the 2,500th anniversary of the founding of the Iranian monarchy (Persian Empire) by Cyrus the Great. The intent of the celebration was to demonstrate Iran's long history and to showcase its contemporary advancements under Mohammad Reza Pahlavi, the Shah of Iran. CONDITION: The wraps are near fine with minor signs of shelfwear, and creasing to the spine. The contents are in near fine condition, with a couple of pages coming slightly loose. 1766 Japanese Chinese Dictionary Wakan Onshake Shogenjiko Setsuyoshu JAPANA rare, 18th century woodblock print dictionary bound in the "fukurotoji (variously translated as "bound-pocket," or "pouch" binding)" style (Keio). Setsuyoshu was a true Japanese language dictionary and entered vocabulary current during its prime in the muromachi period. Each entry gives the kanji (Chinese characters), Japanese pronunciation in katakana on the right, and occasionally adds etymologies and comments on the bottom.
This rare, 1766 dictionary is an early inui (乾) edition which are usually printed in movable type and have more entries and corrections and is comprised of 10 volumes!

1694 1ed Oriental Maxims of Arab Turkish Persian Wit Voyages Richelieu GallandAntoine Galland was a 17th-century French orientalist who is best known for his translation of 'Arabian Nights'. However, his push to expand Europe's appreciation for the orient extended beyond 'One Thousand and One Nights' to his own collection of Persian, Arab, and Turkish maxims entitled 'Les Paroles Remarquables'. 'The Remarkable Words and Maxims of Orientals' was first published in 1694 and saw immediate and widespread success, much in part to it being shorter than similar works of maxims. (Dew, p.186).
This book is filled with clever sayings, witty jokes, and short anecdotes that, as Galland claims, come from 'the Orientals'. This first edition was an important piece in the development of Orientalism in France and makes mention of various French authors and poets, George Wheler's voyages, Amelot de la Houssaye's travel notes, and even a political testament from Cardinal Richelieu.
