About This Item

London: The Nonesuch Press, 1923. Hardcover. Very good/Good +. Edition limited to 645 copies, of which this is no. 548. viii, 80 p. 23 cm. Brown and cream paper-covered boards in mylar-covered cream dustjacket. Some small tears and chips to jacket edges and dark marks on rear panel. Offsetting to endpapers.

Best known as a poet, John Donne also wrote witty prose. These Paradoxes and Problems were probably written while he was a student at Lincoln's Inn. Paradoxes such as "That by Discord things increase" and "That Nature is our worst Guide" are still thought-provoking to this day and much humour is provoked by "problemes" such as "Why Puritanes make long Sermons?" and "Why do Women delight much in Feathers?"
