Three large octavo volumes. x, 144 [i.e., 146, with two additional pages numbered 50* and 50**], [2, blank]; xiv, 114, [2, blank], viii, 144, [2, blank]pp. With eighty-one wood-engraved plates (twenty-seven in each volume, including frontispieces) by Benjamin Fawcett after A.F. Lydon, printed in colors and beautifully finished by hand. Publisherís second issue binding of original dark teal cloth dated 1892 at foot of spines. Front covers stamped with central gilt parrot vignette. Teal coated endpapers. Spines lettered in gilt. Spines with very light rubbing to extremities, corners a little rubbbed. Overall, a fine copy with all the plates extremely clean and bright. ìA treatise on 81 species of parrots, parrakeets, lories, and cockatoos, &c., with accounts of their habits in life and in captivity, with supplementary remarks on many of the forms credited to F.G. Dutton. The first two volumes were issued in 18 parts of which the first six appeared in 1883, the remainder in 1884. Volume III appeared entire in 1887. George Bell and Sons, 1884. Hardcover. Very Good/No Jacket. Sadly, volume 1 only. Complete with all plates. The original pressed boards are shelf rubbed and edge worn, with fraying to the corners and edges of the spine. They are otherwise strong and sturdy, with gold gilt to the front and spine. Internally, there are some ink inscriptions on the early pages, along with light, sporadic foxing throughout, but there are no other markings or inscriptions, and the pages within are neat and complete, with the illustrations still vibrant. A few plates with light foxing in the margins and a bent corner here or there, some plates trimmed closer than others, but overall bright and clean and quite scarce in this format. A portfolio containing the title page and 79 lovely color xylographic plates (6-3/4" x 10") with hand-coloring, some heightened with gum arabic, of macaws, cockatoos, lories, parrots, parakeets, and lovebirds. Typically these plates are found in a three-volume set with text and 81 plates published between 1884 and 1887. This portfolio with loose plates and no text is complete with 79 plates as stated on the title page. We could find only a handful of examples of this portfolio in auction records. Intended primarily as a guide for those interested in keeping parrots as pets, the publisher spared neither pains nor expense to make the work as attractive as possible.
