About This Item
De Bry, Theodor, 1629. Very good condition. Copper engraved plate from Theodor De Bry's "Grand Voyages" printed from 1590-1634. Latin versions were printed from 1609-1629.
The engraving depicts Native Americans, perhaps in Central America (due to coconut trees), feasting, dancing and playing, as their chief reclines at the right, a group of young children cavorts in the foreground, and Dutch explorers at the left observe the scene.
De Bry [1528-1598] was a Flemish engraver, designer, printmaker and publisher. He and his sons published literature on New World exploration, often written as first hand accounts, and illustrated with De Bry's engravings. Many Europeans based their impressions of the 'New World' and its people from these early illustrations.
A good strong impression. Grand and Petit Voyages as a set on OCLC 43624921. Engraving 8 1/4 x 6 3/4" on sheet 8 3/4 x 11 3/4". Text in Latin, printed on one side only.
