About This Item

London: Published at the Punch Office, 1848 First edition, in the original parts. Publisher's yellow paper wrappers. A fair set, lacking the 19th volume (in which parts XIX and XX are usually bound), variously worn including many parts with split spines, some lacking wrappers or plates; set includes multiples (whether the entire part or a group of pages) of parts I, II, V-IX, XI, XIII, and XV. Overall, a respectable miscellany of parts from this classic work. Vanity Fair is the first novel Thackeray published under his own name and is widely considered one of his greatest achievements. It is a satirical tale that presents a panoramic view of mid-19th century English society. Notably, Vanity Fair established Thackeray's literary reputation in England and awarded him both fame and fortune. Indeed, as the Encyclopaedia Britannica praises, "the narrative skill, subtle characterization, and descriptive power make it one of the outstanding novels of its period.". First Edition.. Soft Cover. Fair.
