Quarter pink cloth, dark grey paper-covered boards, burgundy & black titles on spine, endpaper maps, [xi], 369 pp, map in text. Head of spine bumped, bottom edge badly sunned. DJ unevenly sunned & soiled, top edge with a broad, shallow chip & small tears without loss of text; in Brodart archival cover. Mangione spent time on the staff of Dolci, known as "the Gandhi of Sicily," in 1965. In addition to "a frank and vivid exposition of Dolci in daily action," it also recounts "encounters with a Mafia killer, with the Cardinal of Sicily, with a Sicilian princess who defies the law as she spreads the gospel of family planning, with the denizens of Palermo's infamous slums, with the author's fascinating brood of close relatives living in Agrigento, and with many other Sicilians from all social levels."
