Title label for spine almost completely worn off, card catalog number written in white on spine, cover boards very worn, University of California library plate glued to inside of front board and university stamp indicating it is "withdrawn" above plate. rear free endpaper shows evidence of a library sticker inexpertly removed, another inexpert removal from rear pastedown endpaper leaving paper residue. Front and rear hinges inexpertly reinforced with sturdy, functional but ugly tape. Leaves very roughly cut with mild foxing and aging, No dj. A reading copy only.

Pedro de Valdivia (1497-1553) was a Spanish conquistador who served as first royal governor of Chile. He led an expedition to Chile after serving as Francisco Pizarro's second in command in Peru, and here he defeated a number of indigenous warriors to found Santiago in 1541. He continued to conquer Chile until his capture and subsequent death during a campaign against the indigenous Mapuche peoples.Written by R. B.
