About This Item

1934. First Edition. Hard Cover. Dust Jacket. (Shanghai: Kelly & Walsh, Limited 1934). First Edition. Sketches by F H Schiff. Full page colour pictorial map, black and white photograph illustrations, black and white and colour sketches throughout, folio (15 x 10 1/2 inches), cloth covered boards with applied photographic illustration and ribbon with title text on front cover. Ellen Catleen was wife of the Dutch ambassador to China in the 1930s. Produced in Art Deco Style with Vignette Drawings by Schiff which perfectly compliment the reproductions of the beautiful gravure images of Peking originally taken with a Rolliflex camera. The book itself is VG indeed although the corners are slightly bumped and there is a small damp patch at the top left hand corner of the back board. In the VERY RARE D/W which matches the pictorial boards. A former owner of this copy had reinforced the edges of the D/W by un-necessarily attaching tape to the top and bottom edges of the D/W. This has now been lifted off by an archival restorer (leaving tape residue) and the D/W has been neatly restored in places. This is a scarce book that evocatively captures the cosmopolitan China of the inter-war era.
