1915. Very Good. An elaborate, highly detailed full page illustration. The Kaiser's Garland was collection of scathing ani-German cartoons, which have much in common with Arthur Szyk's work in World War II.
Titled "The Pipe Lighter" in Sullivan's hand, in ink, below the image. In the book's contents page, this is noted "The Guarantee of Belgium Neutrality."
Sullivan was by then an accomplished and widely published pen and ink artist, having created the dancing skeleton for The Rubaiyat of Omar Khayyam, 1912, which was adopted by The Grateful Dead. He also illustrated Maud, Sator Resartus, A Dream of Fair Women, and works by Keats, Shakespeare, Goldsmith, H.G. Wells, Washington Irving, Leigh Hunt, Robert Burns, Tennyson et al. He is considered an artist's artist for his fine, highly detailed pen work and is in most reference books from The Golden Age of Illustration.
Signed and dated. Image size 9 1/2" x 13 1/2" on art board, light soling in the white margins, upper left corner lightly bumped in the margin).
