Jean Bouchaud. 8vo. pp. XII, 216, [4]. #397 of 2000 printed "sur velin blanc." 10 color plates (Illustrations en couleurs de Jean Bouchaud). Title page printed in red and black. Bound in 3 quarter dark purple morocco. Top edge gilt. Binder's ticket on verso of front free end paper (upper left corner). Pages are clean. Small tear or paper defect in margin of p. 121. A near fine copy. Claude Farrere (1876-1957) French novelist. Many of his works were set in exotic locations. His Fumee d' Opium (first published in 1904) is an interwoven collection of stories which focus on the opium dens and brothels of Vietnam or Cochin China during the 1930's. The book appeared in English under the title Black Opium. This edition contains illustrations by Jean Bouchaud.

Paris, Ed. de La Revue Blanche, 1902, 12mo, pp. 302; contemporary red half leather binding (signed: P. Dayre), with marbled boards, top edge gilt; both orig. wrappers, in good condition, are bound in. - Pierre Bonnard designed the front-cover with a watercolour drawing. - Text-pages browned (as always), and otherwise a very attractive copy. - First edition of the novel, d'un libertinage élégant, set in the 18th century, in Touraine, where Boylesve grew up. The book became, in the first half of the 20th century, one of the most illustrated French literary texts. - This copy has the mention cinquième mille at the base of the front-cover, but note that in the same year of its publication, 1902, the Editions de La Revue Blanche closed down, and its stock was taken over by the publisher Eugène Fasquelle. Future editions were not similar.

Worn through in many spots to board edges including corners which are missing leather points. Some small loss to head and heel of spine. Endpapers and page ends marbled. Only 1/2 inch of blue ribbon marker remaining at top. Pages are foxed and tanned. Binding still solid.

In Very Good- Condition: edges rubbed; joints weak but hinges solid; boards slightly rubbed and scraped; headbands lacking; offsetting along edges of first and last leaves from binding; otherwise pages are clean and bright.

Quantin, bound in 1/4 black morocco over marbled paper covered boards, raised bands, spine lettering and top edge gilt, marbled endpaper. Banville's poetry was admired for his delicate wit and fantasy. A very nice copy with light wear through to corners. A scarce work.
