This author spent a lifetime traveling in the high Andes of Peru and Bolivia and in the Himalayas, looking for these ancient tribes' ways of life. He was an incredible painter, and I was attracted to the book by seeing the original paintings shown by his son at a fund raising in Fayetteville, Arkansas for the rebuilding of a monastery in Bhutan. Carl Berman began these treks due to his career in textiles, so his paintings show accuracy of tribal hand made clothes and an understanding of their value as an expression of incredible skill. Each painting in the book shows typical activities at markets, on the roads, standing for a portrait outside their house or in the mountains, defined by the bright air and light by the high mountains. Paintings are accompanied by descriptions about their unique way of life. To quote the author: "After many years of recording the People in paintings, after endless journeys to their secluded homelands, after years of sitting in huts, hunkering down around a fire, gossiping about varieties of vegetables, fruits, animals, and philosophies, .....these paintings, vignettes of their lives, are possibly the last glimpses we can ever have of the way we were ......"
