New York, New York: Longmans, Green and Company. Very Good with no Dust Jacket. 1894. First American Edition: First Printing. Hard Cover. 357 pages: 5.25 x 7.5 in.: 1.8: KB#010064: No Dustjacket. Boards now protected by a new Brodart Archival Mylar Cover. Boards are dark green cloth with embossed gilt lettering on front and spine and light images of mountain tops on the front board. Boards and pages are mostly clean and unmarked (except for some small dark marks on page edges and four round red design marks near bottom of front board), bright, tightly bound and sharp cornered. Illustrations include tissue-protected frontispiece and 15 additional full-page drawings by Arthur Layard. Contains 357 pages of text, followed by a 16-page catalogue of other Longmans' published works of the time. This classic "lost race" fantasy novel was first serialized in the magazine Tit-Bits Weekly in 1893 - 1894. It is a tale of a penniless British adventurer seeking wealth in the wilds of Africa after losing his family lands and estates, finding romance, and discovering a lost race and its monstrous god.
