Good with no dust jacket. Hardcover. 6"x 7.25". No date, circa early 1850s. Marbled paper board journal with brown cloth spine, shaken with rubbedand bumped edges and corners. Tipped in on the front pastedown endpaper is a blue printed broadside, "Specification for Laying Track on the Peoria and Oquawka Railroad." The broadside 12.5" x 8", has foxing, a fold split, and penciled writing on the back, and is folded to fit in the journal. The first 59 numbered pages are the engineer's notes, with charts, figures, and corrections, Specific projects mentioned are the Connecticut and Passumpsic Rivers Railroad, which started construction in the 1840s, and a private track for E. B. Kellogg. After its engineering use the journal has many blank pages, a few pencil scribble pages, some inked practice signatures, and a few starts of penciled essays, with the added bonus of recipes for vinegar candy, chocolate candy, and lemon pie, written in a different handwriting than the railroad notes. ; 12mo 7" - 7½" tall .
