General Kearny was born in New York City in 1815 and died near Chantilly, Virginia in 1862. His exciting career included service with the African corps in Algiers, the first expedition to the South Pass, Scott's march to Mexico and subsequent battles, the Rogue River campaign, and command of the First New Jersey Brigade, Army of the Potomac [Nevins, I:81; II:52. Nicholson, 23. Decker 35:393.]
