Richard Burton was a 19th-century English author and translator best-known for his editions of iconic works including 'Arabian Nights'. He traveled extensively throughout Europe and the Middle East, voyages which inspired numerous works. The most famous of his voyages was his journey to Mecca and Medina – a voyage in which he went in disguise to not be noticed by Muslims.

The illustrations found in this travelogue are impressive, color engravings depicting city views and illustrations of Arabic/Muslim costume.
