London: James Clarke & Co, 1938 First edition. Signed by the author on front free endpaper to M.E. Tennant, Jan. 1938, and signed again later to Susan Blount, 1966. HB. Black cloth with gilt titles to spine, no dustjacket. 215pp. With 12 b&w illustrations in plates from woodcuts by Hawke. Nicely printed on laid paper with hand-cut edges. A story based on the true case of a wild boy found in Germany in 1725 living in woodland, brought to the English court of George Ist, and later looked after by a country nurse. He died in 1785 and is buried at Northchurch in Hertfordshire . This copy has loosely enclosed a press cutting review of the book from Jan.1938 and a publisher's advert for it. A copy in Good only condition. The pages are mostly clean, with occasional smudge marks to margins, but the covers are grubby and marked, with stained and faded spine, though the gilt is bright.
