The Masters & Fellows Of Peterhouse, Cambridge, 1984. First Edition. Softcover. Near Fine Condition. This architectural record of Peterhouse is published by the college in celebration of the seven-hundredth anniversary of its foundation. It is not intended as a history of the college nor as a picture of life in it in the 1980s, but simply as a photographic survey of its architecturally or historically memorable features. The photographs were specially taken for the book on a series of visits to the college in 1982-3 by Mr A. F. Kersting, the leading architectural photographer. The Master and Fellows are grateful to him for providing what is probably the fullest architectural survey that has ever been published of an Oxford or Cambridge college. The photographs are unusual for recording the interiors of some of the historic rooms used by Fellows and undergraduates. These are rarely included in histories of colleges. Another novel feature is that the photographs show the college in its setting. They thus include adjacent college property such as St Peter's Terrace as well as houses in Trumpington Street and Fitzwilliam Street where most undergraduates and research students spend at least one year of their time in Cambridge. Though not originally built for college purposes, these are all within three or four minutes walk from the Hall and have become part of the social and architectural fabric of the college. Despite being the oldest college in Cambridge, Peterhouse has acquired little in the way of fine paintings, furniture or silver. Hence the exclusive concentration in this book on its richest visual endowment, its uniquely enchanting buildings. Size: 4to - over 9¾" - 12" tall. unpaginated. no Dust Jacket as published.. Black titles spine. minimal dent to front cover. illustrated by b/w. photo's.. Includes list of plates & architectural notes. Quantity Available: 1. Shipped Weight: Under 500 grams.
