[Francis Chute] Mr. Gay, The Petticoat: an Heroi-Comical Poem. In Two Books. Price One Shilling.London, Printed for R. Burleigh in Amen Corner, MDCCXVI (1716). 18.5 cm; 39 pages; 8vo; [half-title, verso blank; title-page, verso blank, address to the ladies, iii, verso of p. iii blank (A4 unsigned); pp. 21-22 unpaginated (half-title for Book II); verso of p. 39 blank]. Printer's device of two peacocks feeding on a bowl of fruit on the title-page; decorative head-piece above address to the ladies, historiated initial also on A3; identical head-piece on B1 (page 1 of Book I) and on D4 (page 1 of Book II); historiated S on B1; historiated T on p.23 (D4); tail-piece p. 39. Errata at the foot of A4 (p. iii). This is a false imprint, one printed for E. Curll. Second edition corrected. ESTC T43931 Ralph Straus, The Unspeakable Curll, pp. 241-242; D. F. Foxon, English Verse 1701 – 1750, C190, The second edition corrected. Dated July 9, 1716 by Straus, who remarked: "… many people bought it, I imagine, as Gay's work. Its ostensible publisher was Burleigh and it professed to be the work of Mr. J. Gay, but in this case the J stood for Joseph for many years. Pope mentions the phantom in the Dunciad : "Curl stretches after Gay, but Gay is gone: / He grasps an empty Joseph for a John." Not to be confused with the later edition printed in Dublin, Foxon C191, 12mo. Rebound in twentieth century marbled paper boards with a decorated blue morroco label on a red morocco spine. Pencil annotation on title-page, otherwise fine.

Denis, Charles, Select Fables. By Mr. Charles Denis. London: Printed for J. and R. Tonson and S. Draper, MDCCLIV. [1754] In-8, 21 cm. [frontispiece by C. Grignion; title-page; dedication to the Prince of Wales (ii); preface (xvii); contents (ix); 448 pages]. Rebound in quarter brown calf, five raised bands, gilt-decorated label, on twentieth century marbled boards. Occasional slight spotting.Following in the tradition of LaFontaine, Aesop, and -- if Quintilian is to be believed -- Hesiod, Charles Denis wrote fables that survive the Classical definition: A fable is no more than a moral instruction disguised under the allegory of an action. De La Motte said a fable was an epic poem in miniature, but with more freedom of subject and in the choice of actors. There are 120 fables in Denis's collection, the last was dedicated to His Grace, Thomas, the Archbishop of Canterbury titled "The Phoenix and the Owl." First edition. ESTC Cit. No. T101633.

Trumansburg, NY: Out of Step Press. Fine with no dust jacket. 2016. Numbered Edition; First Printing. Pamphlet. The author's non-linear poem about the billeting of soldiers in civilian homes in wartime. Copy 89 of a limited edition of 250. Folded into the form of a letter, the work was letterpress printed in wraps of handmade "combat paper" made from military uniforms. The author says: "Some time ago-maybe a year, maybe two? I had a conversation with some of my Combat Paper brothers (well, the kids call them their combat paper uncles, so it follows

It's a thought experiment: if we tore down the barracks at military hospitals and offered incentives for Americans in the surrounding neighborhoods to quarter injured service members, what would the honest instructions…
