Tolosae [Toulouse]: Apud Arnaldum Colomerium, Regis, & Academiae Tolosanae Typographum, 1648 A very rare copy of a city pharmacopoeia in possibly contemporary loose vellum wrap. The Pharmaceutical profession was subject to strict regulations from its earliest origins. Reference or formula books were required, guarded, and handed down. In 17th and 18th century France, major cities published their own pharmacopoeia, with 'official' authority. This is the Toulouse pharmacopoiea authored by Pontio Francisco Purpan. Four large engraved plates by Filippo Bedetti, engraved by Carlo Della Rocca, to the rear of the book. Green softback covers with some marking to the cover. The paper on the spine has has considerable loss, but the binding is still holding well. Internally mainly clean, with a little marking, foxing and few small worm holes. The Responsa Medica, originally published separately in 1668 in bound at the end with its own title page in red and black but consecutive pagination. 1157pp. Van de Sande bookplate on endpaper. During the 30 years war, he was physician to the Elector of Brandenburg and in 1638 cured a large portion of the Swedish army of the plague for which he was much lauded (at least by the Swedes). The first part here in 2nd corrected & enlarged edition was originally published in 1773 as "Methode familière pour guérir les Maladies Vénériennes", and was nothing more than an attempt to promote the use of author's nostrum "chocolat aphrodisiaque & anti-syphilique". Recent half brown morocco, spine with 5 raised bands; marbled boards. ¶ An interesting municipal pharmacopoea, published by order of the Collegium Medici Gandensis under the editorship of the pharmacists J. de Bever, A.D. Goormachtigh, G. van den Haute, and J. de Vos. The popolar names of the Materia Medica also give in Dutch. This was the last of a series of the municipal pharmacopoeasof Gent. The first was published in 1653 as 'Antidotarium Gandavensis", followed by an edition in 1663, and in 1756 as 'Pharmacopoea Gandavensis'. This is the last municipal pharmacopoea published in Belgium, and new was that the names of the Materia Medica are given in both Latin and Dutch. The very rare second, (only a few copies in the WorldCat), and much expanded, edition of this important text. Hahnemann wrote this work in Paris during the last years of his life. In this work Hahnemann gives the history of 22 medicines and their application in chronic diseases. It is an indispensable complement to his "Organon". It is Hahnemann's last work, and includes in extension his "Psora-Lehre". --(A usual with the Baillière publication of this period, foxed throughout the volumes).

Giovanni Battista Morgagni was an Italian anatomist who was Professor of Anatomy at the University of Padua. He maintained his practice in pathology and through his clinical observation of precise detail and his methodical rigour, he has been termed the 'father of modern anatomical pathology'. His major work - Adversaria Anatomica - established his reputation in the field. This is a collection of his minor works including on the death of Cleopatra, and on gallstones. The vellum is yellowed, with browning at the edges and corners and the spine is darkened. There is particular wear to the spine joints at the top spine end with some splitting.
