Marbled paper boards rubbed. Inner hinges neatly strengthened. Pages are generally clean. Marshall Hall (1790-1857) - English physician and leading advocate of physical experimentation. Hall was most famous for his paper on The Reflex function of the medulla oblongata and medulla spinalis (published for the Royal Society in 1833) which "established the difference between volitional action and unconscious reflexes." [See Garrison, Hist. of Medicine, p.412]. Hall published several books concerning his research. According to Heirs of Hippocrates "He firmly established the concept of the reflex arc as a fundamental of neurophysiology and in this work applies it to the diseases of the nervous system." [Heirs of Hippocrates 1466; Waller 3984; Hirsch III, pp. 27-29; DSB VI, pp. 58-60].

The entire book, including the text, was printed from engraved copper plates – 60 plates (an illustrated title page plate, 29 anatomical plates and 30 calligraphic letterpress plates). Bound in a contemporary or near contemporary binding with calf spine and decorative paste paper boards - rubbed, edges shelf worn, old ink stain on rear cover. Both the upper portion of the spine and the tail cap are carefully restored. Board corners are neatly repaired. Interior contains an occasional minor spots of marginal foxing; a couple of tiny holes or paper defects are present on the text plate opposite plate 20. The leaves are otherwise generally clean. Francois-Michel Disdier (1708-1781) was a professor of surgery and a drawing master at the Academy of Painting in Paris.
