The Philadelphia Phillies - Signed By 8 Ball Players

by Lieb, Frederick G.; Baumgartner, Stan

Condition: Good Minus/No Dust Jacket

New York: G.P. Putnam's Sons, 1953. Book has been signed by 8 greats from the Phillies. Richard "Richie" Ashburn (1995 Hall of Fame), Otto Knabe (Philly 1907-1914), Del Ennis (1948 Sporting News Rookie of the Year), Steve O'Neill (Phillies Manager/Top 100 Greatest Indians Players/Managed Tigers to 1945 World Series Victory), Willie Jones (1950-51 National League All-Stars), Benny Bengough (NY Yankees catcher 1946-58/close friend of Babe Ruth), Jack "Jackie" Mayo (Whiz Kid team member), Jim Konstanty (1950 Associated Press Athlete of the Year Award/1950 Most Valuable Player/1950 Sporting News Player of The Year Award). All 8 signatures are written in this order on the free-end paper. The WHIZ KIDS was the nickname given to the particularly youthful 1950 Phillies team. They won the National League pennant in 1950 and entered the World Series against the NY Yankees. Included in the team were starters Richie Ashburn, Willie Jones, and Del Ennis as well as Jackie Mayo, Jim Konstanty, and Benny Bengough (Whiz Kids' coach). The book itself has photos within, some of which are players that have signed this book. There is some heavy wear at top and base of spine and some at corners of book. Grey covers with bright red Phillies design. Binding is still tight. This is a quite rare book, even before being signed by all these players. Books contents are well-maintained.. Signed by 8 Phillies. First Edition. Hard Cover. Good Minus/No Dust Jacket. 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall.
