The Phoenician Of 1924 (with Signed Photograph Of Barry Goldwater, President Of Freshman Class) -
The Phoenician of 1924 (with Signed Photograph of Barry Goldwater, President of Freshman Class)
- Used
Phoenix: Published Annually By the Senior Class of Phoenix Union High School, 1924. Hand-colored frontispiece. 264p., [8]. Nice picture (signed) of Barry Goldwater and article by him as President of the Freshman Class. He notes his brother Bob was Treasurer. Reg Manning has also signed his photograph in the Senior Class. Kemper Marley was also in the Senior Class who became one of Arizona's wealthiest men and though was identified as the man who ordered the death of Don Bolles, it was never proven. A remarkable item for all its connections. Barry Goldwater and his brother transferred to Staunton Military Academy where they excelled. Barry then received an appointment to West Point but had to decline as Baron Goldwater became ill and he had to return to Phoenix to operate the Goldwater Department Stores. Yet he put all his energies into promoting the store and also strengthening the Republican Party in Arizona which was weak. Little could he have known he would one day be a long term Senator from Arizona and a candidate for President of the United States forty years later. In original paper covers as issued with wear to yapped edges and tear to head but interior clean and with many signatures of classmates most of whom are now deceased.

Description:
Against a stark horizon in a harsh climate, settlers in Nebraska everywhere erected monuments to their optimism. The buildings pictured in Dreams in Dry Places are not just famous landmarks like the State Capitol but also humble farmhouses, barns, grain elevators, courthouses, banks, churches, stores, and theaters. They represent every kind of architecture to be found in Nebraska--folk, high-style, commercial, residential, pioneer, and modern; the unexpected and the familiar, the poetic and the prosaic, good and bad. Caught by Roger Bruhn's camera, these structures always suggest the spiritual resources of their builders and inhabitants, who struggled for a livelihood on the Great Plains.Dreams in Dry Places has an architecture of its own, beginning and ending with images of the natural landscape and in between revealing unexpected continuities among disparate structures and settings, juxtapositions of forms, and the vanities and vagaries of architectural style.
