One of 550 copies printed, unnumbered, octavo size, 240 pp. John Phoenix, alias John P. Squibob, or George H. Derby (1823 - 1861), was an early California humorist who used several pseudonyms to write his anecdotes and burlesques. This edition was printed by the Grabhorn Press, one of the most highly renowned private presses in America, run by brothers Edwin and Robert Grabhorn.

___DESCRIPTION: Bound in blue and brown pictorial boards with tan cloth spine, blue paper label with black lettering on spine, title printed in black and sepia, cut on title page and thirty-three coloured headpieces reproduced from contemporary type specimen book; coloured drawing of Squibob, two on blue paper, one on brown paper, and fascimile newspaper, numerous small sketches within text; hand-set in Oxford type on machine-made paper, 240 p., unnumbered limited edition of 550 copies.

___CONDITION: Near fine condition with some minor wear to the label on the spine, and one very small mark on the front cover.
