Slim hardcover volume in the publisher's "one-picture" book series, signed by the artist and numbered 336/500 on the last page, following a two-sided color photograph hinged onto the page before, and a reproduced letter on the pages that make up the rest of the book. Bound in pale green paper covered boards with white text, the binding is in excellent, nearly new condition, save for some rubbing to the boards from shelving and barely perceptible sunning to the spine that is now an elegant gray rather than pale green..

1875. Single plate (22.9 x14.8cm) extracted from an early issue of Irving's The Theatre magazine, comprising tipped-in Woodburytype photograph (14.6 x 9.6cm) of Terry seated in her costume for the Merchant of Venice, with "The Theatre, No. 1, Third Series. Woodburytype" printed directly underneath. Terry sits aslant to her right, looking to her left, with her left hand raised and index finger pointing up, two books piled in the background tightly framing the back of her hand. With (mis)quotation from Act 4, Scene 1 in facsimile of Terry's flamboyant hand underneath: ""Come Merchant have you anything to say"?/ Portia/ Ellen Terry:". Triangle of white to bottom right corner of photograph, presumably from glitch in its reproduction, minute patch of wear to Terry's right cheek, page mount a little soiled, toned and wrinkled. Still, a pleasingly sharp and rich photograph for its age, indeed, as one would expect from the expensive Woodburytype process. Very good The University of Washington Libraries… Read More

Two early volumes of the annual series of collections of the world's best pictorial photographic work, compiled by the editors and staff of "The Photogram," It was published from 1895 to 1962 Each issue was illustrated with high quality reproductions and tipped-in plates, and included extensive introductory narratives and several pages of period advertisements The editors and publishers changed over the years This is generally considered the the longest running and most prestigious photo annual of its time 1914 - Softcover- Good minus in olive green wrappers, with front cover detached and spine exposed Minor chipping along overlong edges Text block is still tight and sound Pages are slightly age toned, but have no marks or damage at all Photos, including mounted plates, are all clean and unblemished 1916- Hardcover - Very good in cream cloth boards with red titles on spine and front cover Minor soiling on covers, but binding is still sound Titles… Read More
