About This Item

Atlanta: Phylon, 1940. Signed and dated by Du Bois on the FFEP, as follows: "Very Sincerely, W.E.B. Du Bois, Dec. 3, 1940." From the estate of a noted African American, a Clark University Class of 1934 graduate, and an Alpha Phi Alpha brother of Du Bois. A truly unique and rare document of Americana: a bound Voume of the first four issues of PHYLON, the pioneering Review of American race relations, with the noted Du Bois as the Editor in Chief. The opening introduction to Vol. 1, No. 1 states: " ... we wish to to establish ourselves as a place of Re-Views - that is, as an organ for considering again and after the event, the happenings and opinions which have to do with the cultural advance and inter-cultural relations of men, in order to reach more final and definite judgments." Contains Volumes 1 through 4 of the first year of publication, with poetry, articles by DuBois and others on an amazing range of subjects from "Faith in the Death Chambers," to portraits of African and Haitian leaders including black and white photographs and even a Du Bois' essay on Pushkin! An extraordinarily rare and unique item! Bound in red cloth Hardcover, with gilt spine lettering. Some evidence of water staining to the covers, small evidence of minor water staining to top of some pages, not effecting any text or illustrations. Overall very good throughout. 398 pages with a detailed subject index to Volume I in the rear.. Signed by Author. First American Edition. Very Good.
