About This Item

(Cape Town: A.A. Balkema, 1974) 0869610708. 4to; original blue cloth, lettered in gilt on spine, with gilt publisher's monogram to upper cover; pictorial dustwrapper, housed in removable protector; pp. x + 254; numerous illustrations, full-page and in text, incl. colour and folding. Merest trace of edgewear to dustwrapper; earlier owner's tiny label to front free endpaper; very occasional fox spot. Very good condition. "Paintings and drawings from earliest times up to the year 1900 are discussed and considerable attention has been given to the neglected subject of prints of South African interest. The main body of this work is a biographical dictionary, with over 1000 entries. Here will be found notes on all the known artists and engravers who contributed to South Africa's pictorial history. ... Collectors and Africana specialists will find this work an indispensible reference and working tool. Other readers, with a more general interest in the social and cultural background, will find that historical fact has been amplified by pictorial Africana." .
