About This Item

D. Appleton and Co, 1872-01-01. Hardcover. Very Good. 13x11x4. 2 volume set. Publisher's moroccan leather binding, gilt ruled, beveled boards. All edges gilt. Hardcover. Volume 1 front board detached. vi, 568, viii + 576 p. in 48 pts. : fronts., ill., plates. ; 34 cm. Clean, unmarked pages. Profusely illustrated with detailed black-and-white steel-plate engravings throughout. Frontispiece illustrations are protected with tissue guards. Following the success of the 2-volume series Picturesque Europe, Picturesque America employed a similar format, with text and editing assistance from Romantic poet and journalist William Cullen Bryant. This two-volume set and others of the same genre achieved great popularity in the nineteenth century. Their illustrations provided a tour of nineteenth century America, unspoilt and pastoral, its centers of commerce, ports, architecture and natural treasures. This is an oversized or heavy book that requires additional postage for international delivery outside of Canada and the US.

Synopsis

Picturesque America   was first published by Appleton's as a serial, received semi-monthly by subscribers. Once their subscription was complete, the serials would be bound into a two-volume set, a variety of binding options available for the original 1872 and 1874 books.  Picturesque America  took readers on a tour of America through art and writing. It included 65 essays written by various authors, and was illustrated by 900 wood and 50 steel engravings. The engravings were done by variety of high skilled artists off of original drawings, mostly composed by artist Harry Fenn, the most prominent landscape illustrator in the US at the time.
