Vignette to title page and numerous engravings throughout, mainly large head-piece engravings to chapters. Emerald green half-calf with 5 raised bands, gilt titles to red label to spine, gilt floral decoration to compartments and marbled paper-covered boards. Spine slightly sunned and rubbed; edges and corners scuffed. Scattered light foxing, heavier to title page, with minor stains. Small grouse shotting newspaper clipping pasted to margin p. 376; no annotation or inscriptions. Comprehensive compendium of sporting lore, originally published in parts. Subject matter includes racing, boxing, theatre and a wide variety of other pastimes including cricket and fencing.

Pierce Egan (1772–1849) was a British journalist, sportswriter, and writer on popular culture. Here he provides coverage of various sporting events, originally published in 25 parts. Egan provides an entertaining compendium of sports lore, with articles on horse racing, boxing, cricket, and fencing. Pierce Egan was a British journalist and sports writer, who also wrote about popular culture. His 1821 book, Life in London, was adapted into a stage play and became the first play to have a continuous run of 100 performances at the Adelphi Theatre. London: printed for Thomas Tegg and Son, Cheapside; Griffin and Co., Glasgow; and Egg, Wise, and Co., Dublin, 1836. 8vo, pp. [4], 414; text in double column; 26 half-page woodcuts, 1 on the title, the remaining 25 on the first page of the original parts-issue format, i.e. first page of each octavo gathering; 4 of these are repeated on the covers; original pictorial boards, and rare thus; generally a fine, clean copy. At least one of the illustrations is signed 'R.S.' - possibly Robert Seymour.
