London: Hunt and Clarke, 1828. Two volumes. (lxxvi, 473; 545). Gray cloth-covered boards.Panelled spines, red and black leather labels. Fore-edge and bottom edge untrimmed. New endpapers.Engraved frontispiece portrait of the author. Light off-setting onto title-page. Most pages uncut at top, some at fore-edge as well. Volume 1 has two folding plans; one of the Solace Gardens of Schwetzingen, Germany; the other of Karlsrhue. An errata slip is attached at the end. Volume 2 has a large folding map of the course of the Mississippi River with 2 small tears and slight browning at one fold. Volume 2 also has three full-page plates at the end showing Indian artifacts and apparel. Plates are lightly foxed, mainly on periphery. Volume 1 recounts the author's travels in England, France, Germany, and Italy. Volume 2 is devoted to his travels among Northwestern American Indian tribes. Some authorities have disputed the accuracy of the narration and even doubted the discovery claims. Several letters regarding this dispute are included in the preface of Volume 1. Bound in contemporary three-quarter leather and marbled boards. Ex-library, with call numbers on spines and ownership and discard stamps on the Bemidji Public Library. Inscribed on both front free endpapers "Presented to the Public Library of Bemidji, Minnesota by Edward C. Gale, Minneapolis, April 1921," and with correspondence from Gale to the library in an envelope affixed to the rear pastedown of Volume II.
