About This Item

Baltimore, MD Penguin Books: Penguin Classics, 1971. Paperback First Edition Thus, Third Printing [1976]. Near Fine in Wraps: shows only the most minute indications of use: just a a little mild rubbing; the pages have tanned somewhat, due to aging. The binding leans ever so slightly, but remains perfectly secure; the text is clean. A handsome little volume: close to 'As New'. NOT a Remainder, Book-Club, or Ex-Library. 12mo. (7.125 x x 4.5 x .75 inches). 411 pages. Shipping Weight: 9.5 ounces. Illustrated with duotone drawings. Translated with an Introduction by Ivan Morris. First Edition Thus, Third Printing [1976]. Mass Market Paperback. The Pillow Book is a book of observations and musings recorded by Sei Shonagon during her time as court lady to Empress Consort Teishi during the 990s and early 11th century in Heian Japan. The book was completed in the year 1002. In it she included lists of all kinds, personal thoughts, interesting events in court, poetry, and some opinions on her contemporaries. While it is mostly a personal work, Shonagon's writing and poetic skill makes it interesting as a work of literature, and it is valuable as a historical document. Part of it was revealed to the Court by accident during Shonagon's life.
