About This Item

New York, NY Penguin Books: Penguin Classics, 1971. Paperback First Edition Thus [1971], Eighth Printing [1983]. Very Good in Wraps: shows moderate indications of use: noticeable rubbing to the wrapper covers; the pages have tanned somewhat, due to aging, and several pages have been lightly bumped at the bottom corner. Former owner's name and phone number inside the front cover. The binding leans ever so slightly, but remains perfectly secure; the text is clean. A handsome little volume, structurally sound and tightly bound, but showing some wear. NOT Book-Club or Ex-Library. May be a remainder, as there is a small, thin and very light mark at the bottom edge, near the outside edge. Appears to be a stray mark, but may be a remainder mark. 12mo. (7.125 x x 4.5 x .75 inches). 411 pages. Shipping Weight: 9.5 ounces. Illustrated with duotone drawings. Translated with an Introduction by Ivan Morris. First Edition Thus [1971], Eighth Printing [1983]. Mass Market Paperback. The Pillow Book is a book of observations and musings recorded by Sei Shonagon during her time as court lady to Empress Consort Teishi during the 990s and early 11th century in Heian Japan. The book was completed in the year 1002. In it she included lists of all kinds, personal thoughts, interesting events in court, poetry, and some opinions on her contemporaries. While it is mostly a personal work, Shonagon's writing and poetic skill makes it interesting as a work of literature, and it is valuable as a historical document. Part of it was revealed to the Court by accident during Shonagon's life.
