New York: Life Publishing Company, 1901. 230 pp. Green cloth lettered in gilt on the front panel and spine; small black illustration of the front panel and spine; gilt upper edge; illustrated with drawings by Albert D. Blashfield. Light wear on the corners with some fading on the spine; no interior markings. John Ames Mitchell was an American publisher, architect, artist and novelist. He was regarded as a Renaissance man who kept to himself but influenced many. The first chapter of The Pines of Lory, called A Relic from Africa, begins, "The Maid of the North was ready for sea. Only the touch of the engineer was wanting to send her, once again, on a homeward voyage to the St. Lawrence. Meanwhile, in her solemn undertones, she was breathing forth her superabundant steam. Behind the wharf lay the city of Boston. A score of passengers, together with friends who had come aboard to see them off, were scattered about the little steamer.". First Edition. Hardcover. Very Good. Illus. by Albert D. Blashfield. 12mo. Book.
