New York: F. M. Buckles & Company, 1902. Octavo, original pictorial green cloth stamped in red, dark green, white. black and gold. First edition. "A mix of poems and stories, at least three of which have fantastic relevance. 'The Wicked King and the Good Queen' is an ironic fairy tale with a pleasantly forthright cynicism cutting the underlying message of how intolerable Good and Evil are to each other, and with plenty of magic to keep things from getting dull. 'The Mysterious Disappearance of Mayhew' is a tale about witch doctors in a contemporary poor black neighborhood. 'The Realization' is a powerful study of old age mellowing past ripeness into a passivity that leads to disappointment, despair and madness, when an elderly couple sell their farm to a developer who turns it into a golf course." - Robert Eldridge. Day, The Supplemental Checklist of Fantastic Literature, p. 45. Smith, American Fiction, 1901-1925 J-4. Not in Bleiler (1948; 1978) or Reginald (1979; 1992). Bookplate affixed to front paste-down. Light wear at upper spine end and upper front corner tip, hairline crack along inner front hinge, a very good copy. (#118625)
