Washington, D.C.: U.S. Government.. 1859.. Lithograph, hand colored, image area approximately 9 x 6 3/4 inches on sheet 11 x 8 1/2 inches. Very good, clean condition; binding holes in left margin just outside neat line. An exceptionally fine handcolored lithograph issued in the "Reports of Explorations and Surveys, To Ascertain the Most Practicable and Economical Route for a Railroad from the Mississippi River To The Pacific Ocean" published by the U.S. Government. This is plate XXIX from volume X, depicting a grey bird with orange and white breast (a variety of Towhee?) perched on a branch. The Latin name given is the contemporary name for this bird; no common name is given. The region noted at the top left of this plate is 35th Parallel. .
