About This Item
Paris, 1827. Fine early plan of Macquarie Harbor in western Tasmania, the earliest separate plan of the Harbor, with soundings in its entrances and within the harbor, which appeared in Duperrey's "Voyage Autour du Monde . . ." in 1827. It is a most remarkable harbor, holding three times the volume of Sydney harbor, with an extremely treacherous and narrow opening to the sea named "Hell's Gates" that required the early seaman to station themselves on either side of the opening, winching ropes to bring the ship through safely.
The entrance to Macqaurie Harbor was charted by P.P. King in 1819. The harbor itself and part of Gordon River were surveyed by George William Evans in 1822 and his chart was incorporated in the 1826 issue of the Hydrographical Office's "Chart of Van Diemen's Land." However, a separate plan was not issued by the Hydrographic Office until 1845.
No. 44. in the lower right outside neat line. 50.5 x 76 cm. Tooley p.317 #215; oddly, not listed on Trove. Engraved by Ambroise Tardieu. Central horizontal fold, in pristine condition.
